BBK beats Xiaomi to become India's top smartphone maker

Xiaomi has lost top spot to BBK Electronics in the Indian smartphone market

Chinese multinational firm BBK Electronics, which owns a number of popular brands like Oppo, Vivo, Realme and OnePlus, has given jitters to the overall market leader Xiaomi by climbing up to the top slot in the Indian smartphone market.

According to Counterpoint Research, BBK Electronics accounts for 30 per cent of Indian smartphone sales in the quarter ended June.  Xiaomi, which holds 28 per cent maket share, has been the unchallenged leader in the hyperdynamic India smartphone market for the last eight quarters. Xiaomi had a market share of 29 per cent in the previous quarter. The third position goes to South Korea's Samsung with its 25 per cent market share.

The battle for Indian smart phone market has intensified after Chinese multinational firm Xiaomi claimed that it has over 20 per cent of the offline market across India. New launches, price cuts and invstments in R&D have helped overall growth of smartphone market with shipments touching 37 million in June. 

BBK Electronics, operating since around the 1990’s, is now the world's third largest manufacturer. Besides smartphones, the company produces and markets a wide range of products, including smart LED television, microwaves, digital television receivers and household appliances.

BBK had registerd a growth of 27 per cent (year-on-year) in India in 2018 and occupied the third position after Xiaomi and Samsung, data from Counterpoint Research shows. 

As part of its smartphone India strategy, Oppo and OnePlus have already set up R&D centres in Hyderabad. Vivo has plans to invest more in R&D. 

In the Rs 30,000-plus priced premium smartphone market, BBK-owned OnePlus has emerged as the leader.
