MG Motor, founded in the United Kingdom in 1924, is now a 100 per cent wholly-owned subsidiary of China's largest carmaker SAIC Motor Corporation. Famous for its sports cars and cabriolets, MG Motor is best known for its great design and stellar performance. India boasts of at least 500 MG cars, of which 70 are in Kolkata.

While MG Motor’s first car will be launched in Q2 of 2019, it will be adding another feather to its cap very soon, in the form of an electric vehicle (EV), which it plans to launch in India within the first year of launching its first vehicle. The plan is to bring in a global pure-electric SUV by 2020.

THE WEEK, in March 2018, had reported that MG was looking at greener and newer energy vehicles in the form of plug-in hybrids, EVs and fuel cells. In fact, they had said that they would be at the forefront of the EV race.

Earlier, while revealing the company's India plans, Rajeev Chaba, president & managing director, MG Motor India, had claimed that the SUV they will launch would not be just a contemporary vehicle with class leading features but also ahead of the competition. “MG will launch a globally competitive pure electric SUV in India, to make our contribution to India’s energy and environmental strategies. The pure electric SUV will be a breakthrough chapter in the EV space in India, being one of its kind in the market,” said Michael Yang, executive director, SAIC Motor International Business. “With cars getting transformed with internet, artificial intelligence, big data and cloud computing, MG can take advantage of this transformation and will use it as its key differentiator, enabling it to stand out from the crowd,” he added.

At present, the company is busy with its pre-launch activities and is working towards finalising its 45 dealership partners, even as work is going on in full throttle at their Hallol plant in Gujarat. The company has said it will also be providing employment to almost 1,500 people.
