Digitise health care

34-Devi-Shetty Dr Devi Shetty | Bhanu Prakash Chandra

While in medical college, we used to make funny resolutions. One of my resolutions was to get a black belt in karate. I got the senior brown belt, but then I moved to England and the black belt remained a pipe dream.

That doesn't stop me from making resolutions. One of my resolutions for 2019 is to digitise health care so that hospitals will become smart and paperless and health care becomes safer. This will make the entire process of delivering health care more comfortable and enjoyable for doctors. Today doctors don't enjoy the whole process because the data is not available the way they want. We have introduced Artificial Intelligence in many places. Now we want to scale it up.

If you ask me about things I look forward to happening in 2019, I would say a stable government which will come up with the right policies for education and health care would top my list. I don't want a hotchpotch government.

I wish a lot more state governments passed resolutions to encourage and facilitate organ donation. And more than anything else, I want to have more postgraduate seats in medical colleges. When you are a healthy country, you become successful in everything.

Shetty is chairman, Narayana Health, Bengaluru.
