Artemis Hospital announces successful one stage correction of Coarctation complicated with dissection of aorta

Artemis-Hospital

Gurgaon, 24th April 2023: On world Health Day, Artemis Hospital is proud to announce the successful treatment of a complicated Coarctation of Aorta and STANFORD A Dissection in a 20-year-old patient in whom the condition began at birth.

Coarctation of aorta is a congenital heart defect where the aorta, the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body, is severely narrowed or constricted. This narrowing leads to very high blood pressure in the upper body and can cause heart failure.

This patient was suffering from coarctation since birth but unfortunately it remained undiagnosed in his country. Had it been discovered, a relatively simple operation would have led to a complete cure. He had been receiving regular medical care and monitoring over the years. But because of the extremely high pressure, the wall of his aorta broke down and split into two layers and blood was forced between the layers. This condition is known as Dissection of Aorta and is dangerous even by itself. In the presence of a coarctation, it is life threatening as the high blood pressure can cause rupture and sudden death. Unaware of this bomb ticking inside his chest, he survived until the age of 18. At that time the dissection was discovered by doctors in his country, side by side he was becoming more symptomatic and experienced difficulty in performing day to day activities. Since the surgery for dissection was not available in his country he was advised to go to India for consultation where the Coarctation of Aorta was discovered. It was clear that surgery was the only possible solution.

Under the care of the expert cardiac surgery team at Artemis Hospital a comprehensive treatment plan was developed for the patient. The treatment involved a combination of replacement of the dissected aorta with an artificial graft and relieving the coarctation simultaneously. Normally coarctation surgery is done from the side and dissection is done from the midline but in his case both had to be done in one seating and all the arteries of the brain, head and neck, and both the arms had to be reimplanted into the artificial graft. The surgery took almost 14 hours. The surgery was performed by DR SUSHANT SRIVASTAVA, CHAIRPERSON HEART & LUNG TRANSPLANT and was successful without any complications. The patients’ recovery was monitored closely, and he was provided with post-operative care and rehabilitation to ensure a smooth recovery.

Today, we are pleased to announce that Mr. Abdullahi Abdullahi Abdulkadir has made a remarkable recovery and are doing well. We sincerely hope that his new life with artificial arteries in the entire upper body aorta will be healthy and happy. The blood pressure has normalized, and he is now safe from the threat of rupture and sudden death. He can walk and do day to day activities normally even in the early post operative period. By God’s grace his recovery was uneventful. The successful treatment has greatly improved the patient's quality of life and has minimized the risk of complications associated with this condition.

"We are thrilled with the successful outcome of the procedure," said Dr. Sushant Srivastava. According to him "The treatment of Coarctation complicated with complete dissection of the proximal aorta is challenging and involves a combination of medical management, interventional procedures, and surgical repair. Complications such as restenosis, aneurysm formation, and arterial hypertension can occur and require careful monitoring and management. Close follow-up of the patient is essential to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients with this condition."

"This case highlights the expertise and dedication of our cardiac surgery team in providing advanced cardiac care and improving the lives of our patients."
