OPINION | The skills that will matter more than marks in the next decade

As rightly quoted by Brian Herbert, the ability to learn and imbibe new skills is the key to success. With the fast-paced developments being experienced in our day-to-day life, students need to adapt to a continuously changing world. Gone are the days when merely good grades and academic performance used to guarantee success and secure future goals. The current student fraternity will be job-ready in the next decade, and to secure their future readiness, they require a balance of academic knowledge, innovative and creative thinking skills, strong emotional well-being, and, most importantly, the ability to learn, adapt, fail, and try again. This motto will surely benefit students as they exhibit a willingness to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Students mutually benefit from developing holistic skills, as employers are continuously in search of individuals who possess a diverse set of skills that go far beyond academic excellence. Students must develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which will guide them to analyse situations in depth and come up with appropriate solutions. Soft skills are another area that really needs to be worked upon. Effective communication and collaboration are indeed important when working with diverse teams and learners, as they help in expressing ideas in more precise and impactful ways. Not lagging behind is technological awareness. With the ever-growing influence of technology, students require an understanding of AI, data science, financial literacy, entrepreneurial thinking, and software and hardware tools.

Artificial Intelligence and automation are continuously reshaping industries, and the ability to work alongside these emerging technologies has become essential. Both innovation and creativity, along with technology, have become indispensable. Students must foster creativity and innovation to generate fresh, feasible ideas. Innovations and challenges go hand in hand, and a balance between dependency and innovation needs to be maintained. Students should always approach challenges with the utmost confidence, where asking questions, analysing information, and making the right decisions are paramount. Adaptability and awareness of ever-evolving processes are equally important, as careers are continuously changing. Entrepreneurial thinking encourages students to identify opportunities and take calculated risks. Equally important are basic life skills such as valuing time management, maintaining proper self-discipline, setting small and achievable goals, and, most importantly, cultivating a growth mindset. This will definitely help individuals overcome self-doubt and remain committed to productive and continuous improvement.

With so many varied aspects being considered, educators need to ensure that timely, age-appropriate learning and effective readiness are provided to students. Many educational institutions are already working on promoting vocational education and, in turn, developing the skills of learners. With the inclusion of Computational Thinking, ‘Kaushal Bodh’, and ‘Kaushal Vikas’ in schools, learners are being introduced to different skills right from the elementary level.

In alignment with the vision of skill development, both ‘Kaushal Bodh’ and ‘Kaushal Vikas’ create awareness about employability skills, giving learners a platform to explore their skills, interests, and strengths while providing awareness about emerging career opportunities. Students also need to nurture skills in computational thinking and logical reasoning. These skills enable learners to analyse complex problems, recognise patterns, think systematically, and design logical solutions. They inculcate analytical thinking and decision-making skills, which are becoming indispensable in this fast-paced world. There is also a strong requirement for emotional intelligence. A strong sense of ethos helps students build meaningful relationships and make wise, responsible decisions, enabling them to bounce back from setbacks and persevere through challenges. Most importantly, cultivating a lifelong learning mindset ensures that students continue to grow and remain relevant in an ever-changing job market.

By integrating and including these skills in the school curriculum, education will empower students not only to excel in their academics but also to hone skills that will make them adaptable, confident, and future-ready professionals capable of thriving in a rapidly evolving global work environment. Remaining curious and continuously acquiring new knowledge supports lifelong learning. These future-ready skills will not only help learners enhance their employability prospects but will also prepare them to become more confident, responsible, and compassionate individuals and global citizens.

Marks may help in providing the initial start, but skills determine how far an individual can go. The future belongs to those who are willing to learn, collaborate, adapt, improvise, and evolve.
