IIMA, IIMB or IIMC; XLRI or SPIJMR; GMAT, CAT or MAT—if you are a student applying for an MBA, knowing these abbreviations will become second-nature for you as you navigate the landscape of India’s best management schools and the exams you need to get into them.

But, before you can write an exam, you need to know where you want to get in. Picking a B-school, one out of India’s over thousands of options, is challenging—especially when you consider a 2016 ASSOCHAM report, that found that only seven per cent of MBA graduates from Indian B-schools get jobs right after completing their courses.

The silver lining, however, to the ASSOCHAM study is that fact that this number does not speak for students from the top 20 B-schools. For an applicant, this means that you have to aim to get into the very best if you want the very best from your degree.

Since 2008, THE WEEK in collaboration with research groups like TMI Network, MaRS and Hansa Research has compiled a list of the best B-schools across the country. These rankings reflect the hyper-competitiveness of the space, but also, the pedigree of schools that manage to hold the top spots year after year.

This graphic below shows you the top 10 best B-schools listed by THE WEEK’s rankings between 2008 and 2018 (barring the rankings of a single year, 2009, where THE WEEK only focused on the most prestigious B-schools).

If you are preparing for a B-school application (and you should do so keeping in mind that deadlines start to close in October and November), this list is for you. But, more importantly, keep an eye out for THE WEEK’s issue, out on stands this Thursday, October 24, which will have the 2019 rankings of India’s best B-schools—All India, zonal and city-wise for both public and private sectors.
