Over 7 500 protest applications filed with Delhi Police all disposed Govt in Lok Sabha

New Delhi, Mar 24 (PTI) More than 7,500 applications seeking permission for protests and public gatherings have been filed with the Delhi Police, all of which have been disposed of, the government informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
    AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi had sought the “details of the number of protest applications/requests filed with the police in each district since 2010, the number of protest applications/requests received by Delhi Police since 2010, and details of decisions taken by police with reasons therefor, district-wise”.
    In reply, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, said 7,511 applications were received by Delhi Police till March 15, 2026, and all have been disposed of.
    Providing district-wise details, the minister said New Delhi district recorded the highest number of applications at 4,657, followed by Central district with 744 and South-East district with 646. Shahdara and Outer districts reported no applications, while the South district recorded just one.
    Owaisi had also sought “details of all notices and orders issued under Section 144 of the CrPC and Section 163 of the BNSS since 2010, if so, the reasons therefor, state/UT-wise."
    In response, Rai said “public order and police are state subjects as per the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution of India”, adding that such data is not maintained centrally for all states and Union territories.
    However, for Delhi, the reply said, police issued 33,640 orders under Section 144 of the CrPC and 10,118 orders under Section 163 of the BNSS till March 15, 2026.
    On denial of permissions, Rai said the “reasons for denial include non-feasibility on administrative grounds, non-fulfilment of terms and conditions, law and order concerns, and permissions sought at short notice”.
