New Delhi, Oct 13 (PTI) A 52-year-old man was charred to death after a fire broke out in a house in west Delhi's Tilak Nagar area on Monday, police said.
The fire engulfed the ground floor of the building and was brought under control by the fire officials.
The deceased, who was alone at home at the time of the incident, was identified as Sunil Kumar Ginotra, a resident of Vishnu Garden.
According to police, a PCR call was received regarding a fire at a house in Tilak Nagar, following which a team from the local police station and fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot.
"We received a call at 10.03 am, following which three fire tenders were rushed to the spot," a Delhi Fire Service officer said.
"During inspection, Ginotra was found inside the premises with severe burn injuries. He was declared dead at the spot," police said.
"His body has been shifted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital for postmortem examination," police added.
The officer added that the fire was confined to the ground floor and that there were no further casualties, the fire officer said.
Preliminary inquiry suggests the fire started due to a short circuit in the office-cum-godown located on the ground floor of the building, police said.
"The deceased was alone at the time of the incident. There are no indications of foul play so far. However, the exact cause of the fire will be ascertained after forensic examination," the officer said.
Police said the property where the incident took place belongs to Ginotra's cousin. The crime and forensic teams have inspected the site and collected samples for analysis.
Meanwhile, a family member recounted the harrowing moments.
"Sunil was my nephew. Around 9.55 am, we saw smoke coming out of the house. A neighbour who lives upstairs rushed down and broke open the door. We saw flames inside and tried to extinguish the fire using water," Yashpal, Ginotra's kin, said.
He further said that at that time, they had no idea that Sunil was inside.
"We were totally speechless when Ginotra's wife asked about her husband," he said, adding that they still don't know what caused the fire and are waiting for the authorities to tell them.
Investigators have recorded statements from family members, neighbours, and witnesses. Forensic teams are examining the wiring and electrical fittings on the ground floor to confirm whether a short circuit triggered the blaze.
CCTV footage from the vicinity is also being reviewed to track any unusual activity around the time of the incident. Further investigation is underway.
