Important matters heard by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, Aug 26:
* Some BJP-ruled states defended in the Supreme Court, the autonomy of governors and President in assenting to bills passed by their assemblies and said "assent to a law cannot be given by court".
* The Supreme Court acquitted two men, including a death row convict, in a case of rape and murder of a minor girl and called it a "classic example of lackluster and shabby investigation".
* The Supreme Court extended by a week, the interim bail of convict Vikas Yadav, undergoing a 25-year jail term in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case.
* Justice M M Sundresh of the Supreme Court recused from hearing the bail plea of advocate Surendra Gadling, accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case.
* The Supreme Court has agreed to reexamine the case of a death row convict punished for raping and killing a minor in 2022.
