Aligarh (UP), Jul 10 (PTI) Authorities in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh district said on Thursday that they have implemented a comprehensive security and management plan to ensure the safety and convenience of pilgrims during the Kanwar Yatra.
The Kanwar Yatra, an annual pilgrimage undertaken on foot by the devotees of Lord Shiva, begins with the Hindu month of Shravan on Friday.
A high-level meeting of district officials held on Wednesday led to the establishment of a central command system, dividing the district into two zones, each overseen by an additional district magistrate. These zones are further subdivided into 24 sectors to streamline coordination and management.
Briefing the media on Thursday, Superintendent of Police (City) M Shekhar Pathak said, "A total of 156 CCTV cameras have been installed at various sensitive locations and an adequate number of drones deployed to monitor the entire pilgrimage route leading to temples, where devotees perform jalabhishek rituals."
He added that peace committee meetings are being organised at key locations to ensure no breach of peace during the Kanwar Yatra.
In response to a question, Pathak said, "A protocol has been set up regarding the sale of meat on the pilgrimage route with mutual understanding to ensure that the sensitivities of the pilgrims are not disturbed on this score."
He further informed that 22 quick response teams have been formed to address any problem or untoward incident. "These teams will address all issues, including water supply, electricity and the health of the pilgrims," the SP said.
All heavy vehicular traffic will be diverted through alternative routes during the festival period.
In a separate announcement, Divisional Commissioner Sangita Singh said a special team has been set up to address potential flooding in vulnerable areas, in the event of heavy rainfall during monsoon.
Officials from the Food and Drugs Authority have also directed all food vendors and hotels to display their licences and rate lists clearly.
"This is to ensure that the pilgrims are not overcharged or cheated by shopkeepers. Any complaint on this score will be immediately addressed," an official said.
