Tribal warriors of Santhal freedom struggle remembered in Gurugram

Gurugram, Jul 1 (PTI) A grand celebration of 'Hool Day' was organised in memory of 10,000 martyrs of the Santhal freedom struggle at Apparel House Auditorium in Gurugram on Tuesday, according to an official statement.
RSS leader Pawan Jindal, Gurugram Mayor Raj Rani Malhotra, Haryana Dairy Development Board Chairman Ram Avtar Garg and senior BJP leader Sunil Deodhar remembered the heroes.
"The contribution of tribal society in making the country independent is no less than any other society. Our tribal brothers and sisters sacrificed their lives against British rule, but their sacrifice was often neglected in history. This day gives us an opportunity to remember their bravery, courage and patriotism," Jindal, who was the chief guest at the programme, said while addressing the event.
Hool or Hul Diwas is celebrated in Jharkhand to commemorate the martyrdom of Sido Kanhu. Before the revolt of 1857, on June 30, 1855, there was a rebellion under the leadership of Sido Kanhu against British colonial rule.
My Home India founder and BJP leader Deodhar described the sacrifice and struggle of the heroes of the Hool revolution as the inspiration for modern India.
"This struggle was fought in the forests, where the Santhal tribe under the leadership of Sido and Kanhu Murmu gave a call of Hool (revolt) against British rule. It was not just a political rebellion; it was a war to protect religious, social and cultural existence," said Deodhar.
In the programme, many people who contributed to the field of social service, education and culture were honoured.
