Jharkhand govt asks officials to assess damage due to rain in Ranchi

Ranchi, Jun 24 (PTI) The Jharkhand government has asked officials concerned to assess the damage caused by heavy rainfall in Ranchi district and submit a report at the earliest, an official said on Tuesday.
Since June 19, the Ranchi district has been experiencing torrential rains, leading to waterlogging, crop loss, and damage to houses and infrastructure.
Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri has directed all circle officers to visit the affected areas, prepare records for compensation, and submit them promptly, according to an official communique.
He also directed the officials concerned to create a group on a social media platform to ensure quick communication and coordination.
"Emphasis was also placed on updating the disaster management plan to address such incidents in the future," he said.
On Monday, a 40-year-old man was killed when a wall collapsed on him due to heavy rains while he was returning home with his two children from school in Ranchi city, while two women were killed after being struck by lightning in Ranchi's Sonahatu.
The district received 459 mm of rainfall against the normal precipitation of 125.7 mm during the June 1-June 23 period.
Ranchi recorded 44 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Monday.
Abhishek Anand, deputy director of the Ranchi IMD Centre, said light to moderate rainfall is expected across the state, including Ranchi, over the next four to five days.
"The situation in Jharkhand is favourable for rainfall and moisture flow from the Bay of Bengal is also contributing to it in the state," he added.
Jharkhand has recorded a 102 per cent surplus rainfall from June 1 to June 23, receiving 247.4 mm against the normal 122.6 mm for the period.
