Monsoon advances in parts of Punjab


    Chandigarh, Jun 22 (PTI) The southwest monsoon advanced in parts of Punjab on Sunday, while conditions are favourable for its further advancement in parts of Haryana and Chandigarh over the next two days, a senior Met department official said.
    According to Chandigarh Meteorological Department Director Surinder Pal, the monsoon has advanced in parts of Punjab.
    "Conditions are favourable for its further advancement in some more parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh over the next two days," he said.
    According to the Met department, the southwest monsoon has further advanced over most parts of Himachal Pradesh, entire Ladakh and Kashmir, most parts of Jammu and some parts of Punjab.
    Monsoon hit parts of Punjab nearly a week ahead of its normal onset time.
    Meanwhile, parts of Punjab received rain on Sunday.
    Punjab and Haryana received pre-monsoon showers over the last few days, providing respite to people from hot-weather conditions.
    According to the Met department, there will be an increase in rainfall activity over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh over the next few days.
    According to a Met forecast, light to moderate rain is likely at many places in Punjab on June 22, 23, 27 and 28, at a few places on June 24 and at most places on June 25 and 26.
    In Haryana and Chandigarh, light to moderate rain is likely at many places on June 22, 23, 24, 27 and 28 and at most places on June 25 and 26.
    These spells are likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms or lightning at isolated places of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh from June 22 to June 28.
    "Heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places from June 22 to June 26 over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, with very heavy rainfall at isolated places on June 22 and June 25," according to the Met forecast.
    On Sunday, Amritsar was lashed by 39 mm of rain, while Ludhiana received 49-mm rain.
    Among other places in Punjab that witnessed rain were Patiala and Pathankot.
    The maximum temperatures at most places in the two states hovered below the normal limits.
    Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 34 degrees Celsius.
    In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a high of 31.4 degrees Celsius, Ludhiana 34.9 degrees Celsius, Patiala 36 degrees Celsius, Pathankot 34.5 degrees Celsius, Ferozepur 32.4 degrees Celsius, Hoshiarpur 33.6 degrees Celsius and Mohali 33.3 degrees Celsius.
    Ambala in Haryana recorded a high of 34.3 degrees Celsius, Karnal 32.8 degrees Celsius, Rohtak 35.6 degrees Celsius and Gurugram 34.8 degrees Celsius.
    However, hot-weather conditions prevailed in Sirsa, which recorded a high of 42 degrees Celsius. Hisar and Narnaul recorded a maximum temperature of 37.5 degrees Celsius and 37 degrees Celsius, respectively.
