Ujjain, May 6 (PTI) Seven persons were detained in Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday after an obscene video of a girl surfaced on social media leading to tension in the area, a police official said.
A bandh was observed at Bichhdod village, some 30 km from the district headquarters, with Hindu outfits claiming that the accused befriended the girl by hiding their religious identity and later blackmailed her.
Police, however, did not mention any blackmailing attempt.
Information was received on Monday night that an obscene video of a local girl had gone viral, following which a man was detained with the help of villagers, Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma told PTI.
Six others were detained subsequently for allegedly sharing similar videos and photos, he said.
Two First Information Reports were registered on the basis of complaints lodged by two girls, the SP added.
A cyber police team is examining the mobile phones of all seven persons and their social media accounts, and police are approaching the girls and women with whom these persons were in contact, the SP said.
Any girl or woman who has had a similar experience with the detained persons should approach the police, the official added.
Mahesh Anjana, state joint secretary, Vishva Hindu Parishad, claimed that the incident was part of a larger conspiracy, and all those involved should be arrested.
