Kumar Mangalam Birla calls on Mamata discusses business opportunities in Bengal



    Kolkata, Jul 30 (PTI) Industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla on Tuesday called on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and discussed investment opportunities in the state.
    The chairman of the Aditya Birla Group met Banerjee at state secretariat Nabanna to explore potential business ventures in the state.
    Taking to social media, Banerjee described the meeting as a courtesy visit and highlighted the group's plans to open an educational institute in Kolkata along with other fresh investments.
    "Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, met me at Nabanna this afternoon. While this was a courtesy visit, he discussed with me the business opportunities in Bengal and their investment intentions here," Banerjee posted on X.
    Banerjee further mentioned that the group has ongoing and pipeline projects worth Rs 5,000 crore in various sectors, including cement and paint manufacturing.
    "They are planning to open a world-class educational institute in the city and have other plans for fresh investments. We discussed all this, and I assured him of our support," she added.
    Kumar Mangalam Birla, the grandson of B K Birla, has existing interests in sectors such as textiles, retail, telecom and cement and is now venturing into educational institutions following the takeover of Ashok Hall Group of Schools after the death of Manjushree Khaitan.
    The group has recently announced to foray into retail jewellery business.
    A spokesperson of the group said that Birla is setting up a greenfield paints plant with a capital expenditure of about Rs 1,500 crore in Kharagpur, which will be operational by the end of the current fiscal.
