US backed programme to provide English language skill launched
Kolkata, Nov 19 (PTI) US Consul General in the city
Patty Hoffman on Monday launched a programme backed by the US
government, that would provide English language skills to
economically disadvantaged people in the age group of 13-25
years.
The US government is proud of the accomplishments of
the English Access Micro Scholarship programme since it was
launched in 2004, Hoffman said.
An NGO has selected 30 people in that age-group, who
will avail the scholarship programme undertaken in 85
countries across the globe.
"If our business as diplomats is to build lasting
relationships between Americans and people from across the
world and in the process hopefully make the world a better
place, then Access is the perfect tool," Hoffman said.
It is not a placement programme, but the children and
youths would impart skills that would serve them well in
future, she told reporters.
The US Consulate in Kolkata ensured, through the
Access programme, that the students learn English speaking
skills, cross-cultural skills, computer skills and critical
thinking skills in future, Hoffmen said.
Hoffmen also joined members of the NGO, Jungle Crows
Foundation, and the 30 participants in a game of rugby.
"For me it is a nice combination. I like sports as
well and sports is a way to take people out of their comfort
zone, out of classroom. It is easier when one is more
interactive than just always sitting in classroom," she said.
