In a dig at the United States, Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece Global Times tweeted asking whether the US authorities who glorified the Hong Kong protests will say the same about the chaos at the Washington DC Capitol. Thousands of angry supporters of Trump had stormed the Capitol and clashed with police, resulting in casualty and multiple injuries and interrupting a constitutional process to affirm Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election.

"@SpeakerPelosi once referred to the Hong Kong riots as "a beautiful sight to behold"—it remains yet to be seen whether she will say the same about the recent developments in Capitol Hill," Global Times tweeted. This was in reference to a statement by the senior Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi who said "what happened in Hong Kong is a beautiful sight", when the city was being roiled by protests against the government's plan to allow extraditions to the Communist nation.

China had been accusing Western countries and politicians of stirring unrest in the financial hub in hopes of creating difficulties for China's overall development.

Earlier too, the Global Times had taken similar pokes at the US when the Black Lives Matter protests were at the peak. According to a then op-ed: "US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi once called the violent protests in Hong Kong "a beautiful sight to behold." Now, the "beautiful sight" is extending from Hong Kong to over a dozen US states. US politicians now can enjoy this sight from their own windows. Quite a few places across the US are witnessing protesters setting police stations on fire, smashing shops, blocking roads, attacking places and destroying various public facilities, as if the radical rioters in Hong Kong somehow snuck into the US and created a mess like they did last year in Hong Kong."
