US First Lady Melania Trump put on a softer, empathic tone to day two of the Republican National Convention after aggressive speeches by Trump’s children from his previous marriages—Eric and Tiffany Trump. Melania recalled her own immigration story as she called for racial harmony and offered condolences and prayers to families of those who lost their lives due to the coronavirus and to those who are suffering due to it—a topic many speakers, including the president, forgot to touch upon.

“My deepest sympathy goes out to everyone who has lost a loved one,” she said.

In the 26-minute-long speech, she said she doesn’t want to use this precious time to attack the other side and added that “I have reflected on the racial unrest in our country. It is a harsh reality that we are not proud of parts of our history.”

Melania talked about the immigrant experience and acknowledged soaring racial tensions—two topics her husband has been criticised of stoking for political gain.

She recalled her arriving in the US from Slovenia as a 26-year-old fashion model and becoming a citizen ten years after living in the “land of opportunity” and called it “still one of the proudest moments in my life.”

Her speech hoped to strike a chord with suburban housewives, with whom the president’s popularity is trailing as per polls. Trump’s image of a womaniser with over dozens of accusations of sexual assault and numerous extramarital affairs has hurt his chances of getting the support of women.

Melania Trump (50) offered a softer approach, directly addressing mothers who are worried about their children's social media habits.

And after a torrent of speculation about the state of her marriage to the billionaire—and biting criticism of his character from other family members—she mounted a strong defence.
