Andre Russell's retirement and Matheesha Pathirana's signing: KKR's masterplan derails CSK from retention to IPL 2026 Auction

From releasing and retiring Andre Russell, KKR orchestrated a silent heist over CSK at the IPL 2026 Auction

The Matheesha Pathirana-Andre Russell saga was the biggest sub-plot heading to the IPL 2026 Auction | BCCI/IPL

The cat-and-mouse game between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was the highlight of the period leading up to the IPL Retention Day and the IPL 2026 Auctions. As things stand, it seems like that the Kolkata franchise may have derailed the Chennai side's tactics at the auction.

Go back in time and recollect the day when Andre Russell was released by KKR. It seemed a shocking development at that time and is a development that allegedly forced CSK to make a surprising move of their own - releasing Matheesha Pathirana. It didn't help that the Sri Lankan was in poor form with a new bowling action but CSK's strategy had a bigger goal - to chase Russell at the auction.

Whether they sensed this or not, KKR knew for certain that CSK's swelling purse wouldn't let them get back Russell at a lower price. In any case the Jamaican would have fetched a hefty price but the Knight Riders' decision to release him was to free up Rs 18 crore. So then, what was the next step? That's when KKR came up with a brilliant tactical move - get Russell to retire. As CEO Venky Mysore said later, co-owner and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan had a huge say in this call.

Now, Russell was out of the window and soon, CSK received another blow with Glenn Maxwell opting out of the auction. These were two of Super Kings' major targets and now, their plan of releasing Pathirana had started to look foolish in hindsight. If it hadn't stung them then, it surely has now at the IPL 2026 Auction with KKR signing up Pathirana for Rs 18 crore to complete the heist.

From releasing Pathirana as a ace to down KKR to losing the Sri Lankan to the Kolkata franchise, CSK's major tactic got ambushed. The five-time champions could still have a good auction and complete their squad but this decision will surely hurt them.
