The sporting circuit in Australia are mourning the death of teenage cricketer Ben Austin who passed away in Melbourne on Thursday (October 30). The 17-year-old's death happened after he got hit on the head by the cricket ball, similar to Phil Hughes' death in 2014 except that the latter happened during the match.
How did happen?
The incident happened on Wednesday (October 29) while Austin was batting in the nets on Wednesday morning. Austin was facing deliveries from a side arm equipment - a modern preparation style adopted by modern cricketers globally. The youngster was wearing a helmet but unfortunately, got struck on the neck after failing to connect a ball while batting.
The helmet didn't have the stem guard, the protective flap that is present in helmets to protect the vulnerable area below the helmet. Therefore, the impact of the ball on his beck was sudden and immense, causing Austin to collapse instantly. He was immediately taken to the nearest hospital and put on life support. However, on Thursday morning, Austin breathed his last.
Who was Ben Austin?
Austin was a hugely popular cricketer in Melbourne, plying his trade with multiple clubs in the country. Mulgrave Cricket Club, Ferntree Gully Cricket Club and Eildon Park Cricket Club are the clubs where he was actively involved. Austin was a batter with prodigious talent and was known for his strong leadership skills.
In March 2025, Austin was awarded for his dedication and attitude to the game. Apart from his outstanding skill set, his personality was also widely popular and was loved by everyone around him. Ironically, it was only earlier in October that Austin had celebrated his 17th birthday.
