Former cricketer Yuvraj Singh arrested, released on interim bail

The arrest was in connection with alleged use of a casteist slur

Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh was arrested by Haryana police in connection with the alleged use a of a casteist slur against another cricketer during an Instagram live event some time ago. The former crickter was later released on interim bail.

According to media reports, Hansi SP Nitika Gahlout said Singh joined the probe following the directions by the court.

The complaint against the cricketer was registered under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act by a dalit activist in Haryana.

The Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act aims to prohibit discrimination and atrocities committed against members of the community. The FIR was registered under Sections 153, 153A, 295, 505 of IPC, besides sections 3 (1) (r) and 3 (1) (s) of the SC/ST Act.

The clip had gone viral, causing a social media outrage, with many calling Singh out and trending the hashtag ‘Yuvraj Singh Maafi Maango’. He later apologised for “unintentionally” hurting sentiments.
