Star shuttler P.V. Sindhu's Korean coach Kim Ji Hyun has quit, according to reports in Outlook and Times Now. According to a report in Times of India on September 15, Kim had to rush to New Zealand on a medical emergency. Reportedly, Kim's husband was facing a medical emergency back home. Indian team chief coach Pullela Gopichand expressed hope that Kim would return soon. "She left on a medical emergency. We stand by her. I am hoping that things would settle down soon and she would be back with us," the publication had then quoted Indian team coach Pullela Gopichand.
Kim, a former South Korea international and coach, faced the court as Sindhu thrashed 2017 champion Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 in one of the most lop-sided finals in the history of the tournament to lift her maiden World Championships title in a third straight attempt. Kim, who changed her name to Ji Hyun Marr, but is better known worldwide by her maiden name, was handed the responsibility to sharpen the skills of former world No.2 Sindhu with the World Championships and Tokyo Olympics, which is one year from now, in mind.
