Asian Games Day 8: Thick silver lining

Five silver medals for India on day eight

Indian athletes continued to impress on day eight, with Hima Das and Muhammad Anas winning silver in the 400m race. Hima clocked her personal best of 50.79s, losing to Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser, who completed the race in 50.09s, a Games record. Muhammad Anas finished at 45.69s, losing to Qatar’s Abdalelah Hassan, who finished in 44.89s.

Dutee Chand qualified for the finals, and won silver with a timing of 11.32s. Bahrain’s Edidiong Odiong won gold with a timing of 11.30s.

G. Lakshmanan won bronze in the 10,000m race, with a timing of 29:44.91s, but was disqualified for stepping out of the track during one of the laps.

Long jumper Sreeshankar finished sixth with an effort of 7.95m. The gold medallist, Jianan Wang of China, jumped 8.24m.

Saina Nehwal and P.V. Sindhu made history by qualifying for the semifinals in the women’s singles in badminton. Both are assured of at least bronze, which will be India’s first individual medals in badminton after Syed Modi won bronze in the men’s singles at the 1982 edition in Delhi. Notably, the achievement comes 30 years after Modi was murdered in 1988.

Saina beat Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon 21-18, 21-16, while Sindhu beat Thailand’s Nitchaon Jindapol 21-11, 16-21, 21-14.

In archery, both the men’s and women’s compound teams made the finals. The men’s team of Abhishek Verma, Rajat Chauhan and Aman Saini beat Chinese Taipei’s Chewei Lin, Hsinmin Lin and Yuping Pan 231-227. The women’s team of Muskan Kirar, Madhumita Kumari and Jyoti Surekha Vennam beat the Chinese Taipei team of Liju Chen, Yihsuan Chen and Mingching Lin 225-222.

In table tennis, the Indian women’s team beat Qatar 3-0 in a group match, but lost to China 3-0. Later in the day, they beat Iran 3-1. The men’s team beat UAE 3-0.

In bridge, the men’s and mixed team won bronze, giving India two medals from the newly added event.

In boxing, India’s Manoj Kumar lost to Kyrgyzstan’s Abdurakhman Abdurakhmanov 5-0 in the round of 16 of the men’s 69kg category. However, Sarjubala Devi, who was included in place of M.C. Mary Kom (who decided to skip the event), won her bout 5-0 against Tajikistan’s Madina Ghaforova in the round of 16 of the women’s 51kg category. Shiva Thapa lost against China’s Jun Shan in the round of 16 of the men’s 60kg category.

In equestrian, India won two medals, a silver and a bronze. In eventing individual, Fouaa Mirza won silver with a score of 26.40. Japan’s Oiwa Yoshiaki won gold with 22.70. In eventing team, India’s team of Rakesh Kumar, Ashish Malik, Jitender Singh and Mirza won silver with a score of 121.30, losing to Japan’s team, which scored 82.40.

In men’s hockey, India beat South Korea 5-3, conceding for the first time in the tournament.
