Iran protests turn deadly as several killed in clashes with security forces

Two protesterss were killed in southwest Iran on Thursday in clashes with the country's security forces, according to Fars news agency.

These were the first civilians to die in Iran ever since people took to streets to protest the rising cost of living in the country.

"The number of victims in Lordegan today amounts to two," Fars reported. Lordegan is located 650 km south of Tehran.

Hengaw, an independent organization that covers human rights violations in Iran, reported a third death in the central province of Isfahan. The protester was shot dead by the authorities on Wednesday.

The Revolutionary Guards confirmed that one member of its affiliated Basij volunteer paramilitary unit had been killed in Kuhdasht while 13 others were injured. The man, identified by the Revolutionary Guards as Amirhossam Khodayari Fard, had been protesting and was killed by security forces, according to Hengaw.

The protest against rising inflation is the biggest in Iran since 2022, when Mahsa Amini, 22, died in police custody after she was detained for not wearing her hijab.

The development comes as Iranian economy is cash-strapped amid sanctions from the US and other countries. The country's currency, rial, has depreciated by a third of its value in 2025 while the inflation touches 40 per cent. In December alone, the inflation figures touched as high as 52 per cent, as per Statistical Centre of Iran.
