Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) clinched a significant milestone for Indian shipbuilding, securing an international order from the French shipping major, CMA CGM, for six state-of-the-art LNG-powered container vessels for more than Rs 2000 crore.
The announcement, shared by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal this week, positions CSL among the most trusted shipbuilders for advanced commercial ships on the global stage.
The Ministry underlined that these 1,300 TEU newbuildings (ships built from scratch) for the world’s third-largest container shipping group will add to India’s credentials as an emerging power in a fiercely competitive maritime manufacturing sector.
The vessels will be designed to accommodate the latest industry standards.
Minister Sonowal, in his congratulatory remarks, lauded CSL for its achievement, reiterating the government’s vision of turning India into a leading global shipbuilding destination—something he stressed in last month’s THE WEEK Maritime Conclave 2025.
The deal with CMA CGM follows a period of strategic investments and sustained efforts by CSL to modernise its facilities and align with global standards in ship construction.
The details on the construction timeline or further technical aspects remain to be finalised. However, this contract win is widely seen as opening doors to further international collaborations for Indian shipyards.
