As part of the year-long celebrations on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, the parliament is all set to witness a special debate on the national song.

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will initiate the debate which is expected to bring to light several important and previously unknown facets about the national song.

The discussion will also highlight the song's historical significance and enduring legacy in India's freedom movement. 

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to be the second speaker in the debate that will also see the participation of Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The government has been allotted three hours for its participation in the Lok Sabha debate, while a total of 10 hours has been earmarked for the entire discussion.

On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will open the discussion in the Rajya Sabha. Health Minister and Leader of the Rajya Sabha J.P. Nadda will be the second speaker.

On November 7, Modi launched year-long celebrations to commemorate the 150th year of Vande Mataram, aimed especially at youth and students to deepen awareness of the song's significance.

The poem was written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee on the occasion of Akshaya Navami, which fell on November 7, 1875. The song first appeared in the literary journal "Bangadarshan" as part of Chatterji's novel "Anandamath".
