Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader and actor Vijay lambasted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in his first public address months after the tragic Karur stampede. Positioning TVK as the primary rival to DMK in the upcoming assembly polls, Vijay charged that the public have lost confidence in the DMK regime.
Addressing party cadres during a special general council meeting of TVK in the outskirts of Chennai, Vijay accused the chief minister of spreading lies against the party and trying to gain political mileage in the backdrop of the tragic incident.
Vijay charged the public themselves have raised questions about the hasty manner in which a judicial commission was appointed soon after Karur stampede to probe the tragedy. Questions are also being raised about the press conference conducted by senior government officials, he said.
As many as 41 people died in a stampede during actor Vijay's rally in Karur on September 27. Over 50 people suffered injuries. The Supreme Court has ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe the tragedy.
Actor-politician Vijay on Wednesday pitched his political party TVK as a strong alternative to the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu, saying the electoral battle next year was confined only between these two parties. Though a SIT of Tamil Nadu police and a single-member judicial commission was probing the tragedy, they were suspended following the Supreme Court's directions.
