Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s proposal to end the two-year-old war in Gaza, saying it provides a “viable pathway” to long-term peace in the region.

The White House released the 20-point peace proposal to end the conflict after a meeting between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington on Monday.

“We welcome President Donald J. Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict,” Modi wrote on X.

“It provides a viable pathway to long-term and sustainable peace, security and development for the Palestinian and Israeli people, as also for the larger West Asian region,” he added.

The prime minister further expressed hope that all those concerned will come together behind Trump’s initiative and support this effort to end the conflict and secure peace in the region.

The US president’s peace plan proposes that Gaza will be a redeveloped, deradicalised, terror-free zone that does not pose a threat to its neighbours.

The proposal calls for the release of hostages and amnesty to Hamas members. “Members of Hamas who wish to leave Gaza will be provided safe passage to receiving countries.”

Israel has welcomed the plan, saying it would achieve the country’s war goals. Netanyahu, however, added that if Hamas rejects the proposal, Israel will “finish the job” by itself.

India had in the past condemned the civilian deaths in the ongoing conflict and said that the resulting humanitarian crisis in the region is “simply unacceptable”.

New Delhi has maintained that the international humanitarian law must be respected by everyone under all circumstances.
