BJP MP Hema Malini, who is leading an eight-member NDA delegation to look into the circumstances that led to the stampede in Karur that resulted in the death of 41 people during a rally of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay, seemed to be suggesting a conspiracy angle as she said the narrow venue and power cut during the rally appeared to be "something fishy."
She pointed out that the decision of local authorities to allow a "narrow venue" for the programme was "inappropriate."
"There was a power cut during Vijay's rally. Something appears to be fishy, not natural," she said.

Calling it a "horrible stampede," she said such an incident never happened in the history of politics. "Administration should have taken care of that, they failed to do it...People are also feeling very bad about it. I went and saw the place where the stampede took place. It is very sad to see such a site...Who is responsible for all this? We want to know," she said.
"It is very sad to see such a thing; it should not happen...Vijay should have seen that if he is so popular, he should not invite so many people," she added.
Had TVK been allotted 'open space' for Vijay's rally, the stampede would not have happened.
Vijay seemed to echo this claim as he sought to clarify that his party always sought permission from the police for a safe place. "But things that shouldn't have happened have happened."

He said he will soon meet the victims and requested Chief Minister M.K. Stalin not to harm his party functionaries who have been arrested. "You may come to my house or my office and take any action against me, but not against them... Soon, every truth will come out."
