External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will hold bilateral discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York on Monday amid the strain in relations between the two countries over the tariff crisis.

Jaishankar is in New York to attend the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

Rubio will meet the EAM on Monday morning, according to the daily schedule issued by the State Department. The last time the two leaders met was in July for the QUAD Foreign Ministers’ Meet.

The meeting comes days after President Donald Trump signed a proclamation to impose a whopping $100,000 fee on H-1B visas, a move that could impact thousands of Indian job aspirants in the US.

Meanwhile, a delegation led by Union Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal has also arrived in New York to hold discussions towards achieving an early conclusion of a trade agreement.

Goyal is accompanied by the special secretary in the ministry, Rajesh Agrawal and other officials.

"The delegation plans to take forward the discussions with a view to achieving early conclusion of a mutually beneficial Trade Agreement," according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Last week, a team of officials from the office of the United States Trade Representative had visited New Delhi for the next round of negotiations on the trade deal.

The relations between India and the United States nosedived last month after Trump imposed a whopping 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, citing New Delhi’s continued purchase of cheap Russian oil.

Washington has been accusing India of funding Russian President Vladmir Putin’s war machines in Ukraine by purchasing the oil.

However, a thaw in relations has been visible since Trump telephoned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and extended wishes on his birthday last week.

Calling Modi a ‘close friend’, Trump expressed hope that a trade deal could be reached between the two countries at the earliest.
