Vice president election: PM Modi first to cast vote; results likely by evening

Prime Minister Narendra Modi cast the first vote in the vice presidential election, which is witnessing a direct contest between NDA nominee C.P. Radhakrishnan and Opposition candidate B. Sudershan Reddy.

Modi cast his vote in the polling booth set up in Room No. 101, Vasudha, in the Parliament building. He was accompanied by Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Jitendra Singh and L. Murugan.

Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Meghwal, Pralhad Joshi, Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson Harivansh, former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav, Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Nasser Hussain were among the early voters.

The polling, which is conducted under a secret ballot system, began at 10 am. The voting will continue till 5 pm, and the counting will begin at 6 pm. The result will be out later in the evening.

The NDA has a clear edge in the electoral college, which comprises members of both houses of parliament. The ruling alliance has 293 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 129 MPs in the Rajya Sabha, making their tally 422.

“Voted in the 2025 Vice President election,” Modi wrote on X as he shared photos of him exercising his franchise.

The prime minister shortly embarked on a visit to the flood-hit states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. “Leaving for Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to review the situation in the wake of floods and landslides. The Government of India stands shoulder to shoulder with those affected in this tragic hour,” he said.
