Maratha quota agitation leader Manoj Jarange, who began his long march to Mumbai from his village in Jalna district on Wednesday, reached the Azad Maidan in south Mumbai to begin his indefinite fast, on Friday.

The activist has been demanding a 10 per cent quota for Marathas under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.

Around 9.45 am, Jarange entered Azad Maidan amid police security and was greeted by thousands of supporters sporting saffron caps, scarves and saffron flags.

The area near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) witnessed massive traffic congestion in the morning.

The Mumbai Traffic Police issued an advisory, restricting the movement of vehicles on certain routes and assigning alternate routes:

"Roads closed for all vehicular traffic as per requirement and prohibited for parking. All Heavy vehicles are restricted from Dt 29/08/2025 on 00.00 hrs till further order:-

 

All types of vehicles going from V.N. Purav Road to Pancharpol-Freeway via South Bond are prohibited.

All types of vehicles going from Deonar Farm Road to Pancharpol are prohibited.

All types of vehicles going from Trombay Chita Camp to V.N. Purav Marg to Freeway and Panjarpol are prohibited

All vehicles coming from Sion Panvel Marg to Mankhurd Traffic Division to Panjarpol are completely prohibited

All vehicles coming from C.G.Gidwani North Channel to Panjarpol

All vehicles getting down from East Mukt Marg North Channel to Panjarpol Junction

Vehicles going on South Channel on East Mukt Marg from IOC Junction and Govandi Railway Bridge

Vehicles going from Vaman Tukaram Patil Marg to Panjarpol Junction to East Mukt Marga North Channel

Alternative route :-

 

All types of vehicles coming from V.N. Purav Marg South Channel towards Panjarpol and Purav Mukt Marg should take a right turn from Punjabwadi Junction and proceed from Hemant Karkare Gas Pump towards Govandi Station, then take a left turn from Gaondevi Chowk, Neelam Junction right turn, then from Mankhurd Traffic Division boundary to I.O.C. Junction, then take a left turn and enter Mumbai city.

 

All types of vehicles going to Panjarpol via Deonar Farm Road should take a straight turn from Punjabwadi Junction to Hemant Karkare Gas Pump towards Govandi Station, then take a left turn from Gaondevi Chowk, Neelam Junction right turn, then from Mankhurd Traffic Division boundary to I.O.C. Junction. Junction will take a left turn and enter Mumbai city.

 

All types of vehicles going from Trombay Chita Camp to V.N. Purav Marga to Freeway and Panjarpol will take a right turn from R.K. Chowk, take a left turn from Sion Panvel Marg North Channel, take a left turn from Mankhurd Railway Bridge T Junction and enter Mumbai city via Ghatkopar Mankhurd Link Road via Chhedanagar.

 

All vehicles coming from C.G. Gidwani North Channel to Panjarpol will take a left turn from Golf Club, take a straight turn from Chimani Garden to Diamond Garden, take a right turn from Sion Trombay Marg North Channel, take a left turn from Panjarpol Junction and take a left turn from Vaman Tukaram Patil Road and proceed through Mankhurd Traffic Department limits from I.O.C. Junction and take a right turn from Ghatkopar Mankhurd Link Road towards Navi Mumbai.

 

From the East Free Road North Channel to Panjarpol Tunnel, all types of vehicles will leave for Navi Mumbai from the Panjarpol Flyover and then from IOC Junction, take a right turn towards Navi Mumbai.

 

From Govandi Railway Bridge, take a right turn at Neelam Junction and then take N.G. Acharya Road to Subhash Nagar, Chembur Station and go towards Mumbai or elsewhere.

 

All vehicles going from Vaman Tukaram Patil Road to the East Free Road North Channel will take a right turn from Panjarpol Junction and go towards Mumbai via Maitri Park Sion Trombay Road.

 

The above order shall be in force on dt 29/08/2025 till further order."

Police also directed that only five vehicles of protesters can head to Azad Maidan. The number of protesters at the event should not cross 5,000, the police said.

Over 1,500 Mumbai police personnel have been deployed at Azad Maidan to maintain law and order ahead of Jarange's agitation, officials said.
