The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy showers in Hyderabad for Thursday. While light to moderate rain with a possibility of a heavy spell has been predicted for the capital, as many as four districts in the state will experience a flood situation, the IMD said.
The districts of Kamareddy and Medak are facing a huge flood situation, and the weather pattern is threatening to shift towards Hyderabad, Sangareddy, and Medchal.
Red alert has been issued for Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Jagtial, Adilabad, Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Rajanna Sircilla, Nirmal, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Janagama, Mancherial, Hanmakonda, Warangal, Siddipet, Sangareddy, and Medak districts.
Kamareddy floods
Kamareddy district battles heavy flooding on Thursday morning, as rainwater has reached alarming heights in the urban region as well. Several areas in Kamareddy remain inaccessible, while vast stretches of agricultural fields were inundated. The National Highway 44 is damaged, disrupting traffic along the north-south corridor. Vehicles are currently suspended on either side as officials struggle with repair works.
The traffic from Hyderabad to Kamareddy and Ramayampet to Hyderabad has been suspended. Heavy rains have damaged the railway track near Bikkanoor-Talamatla after gravel was washed away under the track. The Railway has suspended 22 trains, including those coming from Maharashtra, Nanded, Aurangabad, and Shirdi to Hyderabad.
The Meteorological Department has stated that there is a possibility of heavy rains in Medak and Nirmal districts on Thursday.
The Argonda area in Kamareddy bore the brunt of the rains, with the district receiving 418.3 mm of rainfall from 8.30 am to 9 pm on Wednesday, followed by 302.5 mm of rain at Akkapur in Nirmal district. Kamareddy District SP Rajesh Chandra has advised people to be vigilant as heavy rains are lashing the district like never before. Authorities declared holidays for all educational institutions in Kamareddy, Medak, Adilabad, Karimnagar, and Jagtial districts.
As for Medak, the district witnessed unprecedented rainfall in the past 24 hours, causing streams, lakes and dams to overflow. Neighbouring Nagapur received 284 mm, while Chegunta reported 248 mm. Ramayampet and Medak RDO offices both recorded 213 mm each, and Rajpally reported 200 mm.
