Popular Bengali actor Joy Banerjee, 62, died today at a private hospital in Kolkata. According to hospital sources who spoke to local media, the actor who turned politician had been ill for some time. He had been admitted to the hospital due to respiratory problems.
Who was Joy Banerjee?
Born on May 23, 1963, Joy made it into popular Bengali films like Nagmati, Chopra, Hirak Jayanti, Milan Tithi, and Bidrohi. He made his acting debut in the 1982 film Nimalur Banabas.

Alongside his acting, he later joined politics and was once the member of the BJP state committee. He had contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Birbhum in West Bengal. He also contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Uluberia.
He was also once married to Ananya Banerjee. He had gotten married for a second time to Ankita and lived with her and her mother.
In his later years, however, Joy was not active in politics, probably due to physical illness In 2021, he officially announced that he would no longer represent the BJP.
Joy was paired with actress Chumki Chaudhury in the film Abhagini, which became popular among film lovers. He has also worked with directors Sukhena Das and Anjan Chowdhury.
