Maharashtra's State Emergency Operations Centre has issued a red alert for Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburbs, Thane, Ratnagiri, Palghar, Raigad, Chandrapur districts as well as ghat areas of Pune and Nashik.
However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has dismissed rumours about fake messages claiming that August 20 would be a school holiday. “This message is fake. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has not issued any such information through its official social media platforms,” BMC posted on X.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has declared a holiday for schools on Wednesday. “In view of heavy rainfall, a holiday has been declared for tomorrow, 20th August 2025, for all schools under the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and all mediums in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation area.”
Thane Municipal Corporation declared holiday for schools in the backdrop of ongoing heavy rainfall in the district. Panvel Municipal Corporation also had a similar post, saying a holiday has been declared for all schools and colleges within its jurisdiction of the municipal corporation amid heavy rainfall.
This comes as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis warned that the next 48 hours would be crucial for districts like Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.
Mumbai alone has received 300 mm of rain in the past 24 hours with continuous rain battering the city for two days. Meanwhile, Mithi river has crossed the danger mark, with 400 to 500 people being shifted to safer locations.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Tuesday revealed that a Monorail train came to a halt between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park stations due to a technical glitch caused by "overcrowding". More than 500 passengers were rescued by the fire brigade with the help of snorkel cranes. Another train which stuck near the Wadala bridge was towed to the nearest station and some 200 passenger onboard were rescued.
