Six students dead and at least 30 injured as school building collapses in Rajasthan's Jhalawar

The roof of a classroom collapsed on Friday morning in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, trapping as many as 30 people, a majority of whom are children. At least six students are thought to have been killed, and as many as 30 are injured and admitted to hospitals.                      

The incident is thought to have happened at about 8.30 am. Local media reported that the students were attending classes in Peeplodi Government School of Manoharthana in Jhalawar when the building collapsed. There were around 35 students in the building when the incident occurred according to officials.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma said in a post on X that,"Instructions have been given to the concerned authorities to ensure proper treatment for the injured children."  

Superintendent of police, Jhalawar, Amit Kumar, said that some of the children were critically injured while speaking to PTI. 

Police also said that students were taken out of the debris with the help of teachers and villagers. The children were rushed to the Manohar Thana Community Health Centre (CHC) for treatment.

The collapse of the school's roof is thought to have been triggered due to heavy rains and the building's dilapidated conditions. Authorities are expected to conduct an inquiry into the cause of the building's collapse.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a post on X that said, "The mishap at a school in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, is tragic and deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the affected students and their families in this difficult hour.”
