Amid massive outrage and calls for resignation demands over a government hospital building collapse that killed a woman in Kottayam on Thursday, Health Minister Veena George complained of discomfort and was admitted to Kottarakkara Government Taluk Hospital in the evening.

Doctors have administered IV drip and Veena is expected to be discharged in the night. The minister's blood pressure turned high, causing uneasiness, according to Onmanorama.

This comes as the Congress-led opposition bloc UDF has been calling for the minister's resignation over the collapse of a 68-year-old building at the Kottayam Medical College Hospital in the morning, killing a woman and injuring three others. The deceased was identified as Bindu, 52, a native of Vaikom, Kottayam. The injured were identified as Aleena Vincent, 11, from Wayanad, hospital staffer Amal Pradeep and Jinu Saji, 38, reported the outlet.

The Youth Congress and Youth League, the youth wings of UDF parties Congress and IUML respectively, held widespread protest across the state, targeting Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the health minister. Veena's effigy was burnt by the Youth Congress in Palakkad district's Sultanpet and the activists were arrested. Violent protests by the Youth Congress were reported in Kozhikode, Ernakulam and the minister's home district Pathanamthitta. KSU, the Congress student wing in the state, and the Youth Congress also marched to Veena's office in Thiruvananthapuram.

The health minister earlier said she directed the district collector to hold an inquiry into the incident.
