Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered the immediate suspension of senior police officials, including the Bengaluru police commissioner, for alleged negligence and laxity following Wednesday's stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium during the RCB's victory celebrations.
The chief minister who addressed a press meet following the state cabinet meeting said that Bengaluru City Police Commissioner S. Dayanand, Additional Commissioner of Police in charge of the stadium, Central DCP, ACP of the area and the police inspector from the Cubbon Park police station had been suspended and further action would be taken based on the inquiry findings.
Yesterday, the government had initiated a magisterial inquiry by Bengaluru Urban DC Jagadish G.
The state cabinet also decided to appoint a one-member judicial commission of retired High Court judge Justice Michael Cunha to investigate the incident.
An FIR has been registered against the RCB franchise, DNA – event management company and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The accused have been booked for criminal negligence. The FIR has invoked Sections 105, 125(1)(2), 132, 121/1, and 190 read with 3(5) of relevant legal provisions (creating public nuisance, criminal conduct and abetment to commission of a crime).
The chief minister has ordered a CID investigation against the three institutions and the arrest of their representatives.
Siddaramaiah, who expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, stated that the incident had hurt the government and emphasised that such incidents had not occurred during his tenure as the MLA, minister, deputy chief minister, or chief minister.
"The government will provide support to the families of the victims and ensure a thorough investigation," assured the CM.
