‘India would have finished off Pakistan, but UN ordered us to stop’: BJP MLA

Narendra Prajapati’s remarks came even as the government categorically ruled out any third party intervention in the ceasefire.

Even as the controversy over US President Donald Trump’s claim of involvement in the India-Pakistan ceasefire is yet to die down, a BJP MLA from Madhya Pradesh sparked off another political storm on Saturday after claiming that New Delhi stopped its military strikes because of an order from the United Nations.

The Narendra Modi government has categorically ruled out any third party intervention and said the ceasefire was reached after the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan called his Indian counterpart.

Speaking at a `Tiranga Yatra' organised by the BJP in Rewa, Narendra Prajapati, a first-time MLA, said Pakistan would have been finished off unless the UN ordered India to stop.

"I will say that the exercise under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi against Pakistan would have finished it (neighbouring country) off, had we not got an order of ceasefire from the UN, as Modi ji had said very soon a befitting reply will be given (to the terror attack)," he said.

As his remarks triggered a row, the MLA clarified in the evening that he had spoken “in a surge of emotions”. He accused media of presenting his statements in distorted and doctored way.

"Indian Army entered Pakistan and destroyed nine bases of terrorists. When Pakistan's economy wobbled and Pakistan was on its knees and pleaded, only then prime minister Modi and the Indian armed forces announced a ceasefire," he said.

Prajapati is not the first BJP leader from the state to court controversy by making remarks on India’s military operation. On Friday, Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda said the country, its army and soldiers have "bowed down at the feet" of PM Modi because of the successful execution of Operation Sindoor. Earlier, another minister Vijay Shah came under fire for his remarks on Col Sofiya Qureshi who conducted media briefings on Operation Sindoor.
