A formal request has been made to the Defence Minister to file an FIR in the matter of the trolling faced by Himanshi Narwal, the wife of Lieutenant Vinay Narwal who was killed in the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22.
Requested by former IPS officer and social activist, Amitabh Thakur calls for the Defence Ministry and Indian Navy to take notice of the ‘open disrepute and mudslinging’ that Narwal’s widow has faced since she said that she does not want hate against Muslims and Kashmiris.
Social media has had several posts that also play Himanshi’s stance against those of others who lost loved ones in the attack and have denounced it for its overtly religious nature given that the killed were asked about their religion.
On May 2, Himanshi said, “I don’t want any hatred towards anybody”- a statement which has been twisted to portray that she has a soft corner for the perpetrators.
The National Commission of Women took note of the hate she received and on May 5 issued a note terming it ‘unacceptable’. However, as the complainant pointed out, the Commission had not taken any further action.
Thakur has described the trolls as disgusting, paranoid, abysmal and abhorrent while calling on the Navy to step in for the glory of its men and for the larger public interest. He has attached examples of social media comments with web links and other attachments to illustrate the vastness of the hate Himanshi has been receiving.
Thakur, who is also the president of a political outfit called the Azad Adhikar Sena, has said that if a police complaint is not made in the matter in three days, he shall be forced to take matters into his own hands.
