Last week, two people were killed and three injured in similar incidents in the Delhi-NCR region. An under-construction wall on the sixth floor of a building in Madhu Vihar killed a 67-year-old man. A wall collapse newly-constructed balcony in Karol Bagh area resulted in the death of a 13-year-old boy.
NDRF DIG Mohsen Shahidi explained the building collapse. "We call this a 'pancake collapse' – a particularly dangerous type where chances of survival are minimal. Still, we hope there are lives that can be saved and we are actively searching," he told PTI.
Shahidi added that debris is being cleared slowly as it is a highly congested area, and since the use of heavy machinery is limited due to space constraints.
Reports suggest that the construction work in the "two-three shops" on the ground floor could have led to the collapse. The building's owner Tehsin and his family live on the first floor while tenants live in the rest of the building.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, AAP chief and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and Leader of Opposition Atishi took to X to express their grief over the incident.
