Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday lashed out at the West Bengal government for allegedly not cooperating with the fencing work along the Bangladesh border.

He alleged that the Bangladeshi infiltrators and Rohingyas were entering India through West Bengal, but the fencing of around 450 km border was pending as the state government did not give land.

"Whether Bangladeshi infiltrators or Rohingyas, earlier they used to enter India through Assam when Congress was in power. Now they enter India through West Bengal where Trinamool Congress is in power,” he said.

Shah was speaking in the Lok Sabha during a debate on the Immigration and Foreigners Bill which the lower house later passed.

The home minister went on to allege that those illegally entering India get Aadhaar cards from West Bengal’s 24 Paragans district and expressed confidence that the BJP would come to power in the state in 2026 and put and end to this situation.

“All the Bangladeshis who have been caught have Aadhaar cards from 24 Parganas district. You (TMC) issue Aadhaar cards and they come to Delhi with voter cards. In 2026, the BJP government will be formed in West Bengal and we will put an end to this," said Shah.

The home minister alleged that the party workers of the ruling party indulge in hooliganism and religious sloganeering whenever the process of fencing begins.

India’s border with Bangladesh is 2,216 km, out of which 1,653 km has been fenced. “Of the remaining 563 km, there cannot be fencing on 112 km due to difficult terrain such as rivers, drains and hills. Fencing on 450 km is pending as the Bengal government does not give land. Seven meetings on this have already been held," said the home minister.

Asserting that India is not a “Dharamshala’, Shah said those who posed a threat to the national security would not be allowed to enter the country.

“If someone comes to the nation to give its contribute to the development of the nation, they are always welcome," Shah said.
