Jammu and Kashmir is set to experience light to moderate rainfall over the next 36 hours, with snowfall occurring in some areas, according to the meteorological department. Several parts of south Kashmir have already reported fresh snowfall.

Officials predict that the wet spell will persist for the next few days, though weather conditions are expected to improve from Sunday, 16 March, with only isolated showers in certain areas. A more substantial improvement is anticipated by 17 March.
A yellow warning has been issued, advising of isolated snowfall and lightning across the region. Authorities have also cautioned about potential transport disruptions, particularly at higher altitudes and key mountain passes on 14 and 15 March.
This winter, Kashmir has recorded significantly less snowfall than usual, raising concerns among residents and experts about its impact on water resources and agriculture. The below-average snowfall has particularly affected the upper reaches, where heavy snow is typically expected during the winter months.

The wet spelling is likely to replenish water bodies in Kashmir and increase the follow in rivers like Jhelum which is a source of water for thousands of people across Kashmir. The increased water level could also improve the chances of a higher generation of hydel power. Kashmir generally receives heavy precipitation during the peak winter period called 'chila kalan' that last for 40 days from December 20 to January 30. This year scant snowfall was witnessed in Kashmir leading to the drying up of springs and rivers. The less snowfall also impacted tourism, especially in Gulmarg. The second leg of Khelo India Winter Games were also postponed in Gulmarg.
The sporting event was however held in Gulmarg from March 9-12 The event was attended by a large of players and sports enthusiasts.
