The 29-year-old man who was executed in the UAE after being convicted for the murder of an Emirati citizen had rang up his mother a day before his execution. Muhammed Rinash Arangilottu made an emotional phone call to his mother, weeping and pleading for his life.

Laila, his mother who left for the UAE for his burial, told reporters that she assured him to do everything possible to bring him back. However, all her efforts ended in vain as Rinash was executed the next day. His burial was held in the UAE in the presence of his family members and three brothers.

The Indian Embassy informed the family about the execution on February 28.

The murder that resulted in Rinash's execution happened in 2023. Rinash was sentenced to death on February 8, 2022, for the killing of a disabled Emirati citizen Abdullah Ziyad Rashid Al Mansoori.

According to reports, Al Mansoori confronted Rinash over a Hyderabad-based woman, who was his colleague. The Emirati was her husband and he reportedly confronted Rinash over the alleged affair. The verbal altercation between the duo turned violent after which Al Mansoori was stabbed to death. Rinash has since then been lodged in Al Ain Manasir prison.

The case moved very fast and in less than a year, a UAE court announced the verdict and the execution order. His family back home knocked on all doors, even approaching the Emirati victim's family for mercy, but in vain. They also reached out to all political leaders like Rahul Gandhi.

Laila visited her son twice in Dubai but the family didn't have the means to handle cases there as only Emirati advocates could represent clients there. The family could not afford one, who could charge lakhs for a single sitting.

Another Keralite executed

Muraleedharan P V, the 43-year-old Kerala man who was also executed, had also called his family to inform them about his execution. Though the family tried to get in touch with the Indian Embassy immediately, they reportedly received no information leaving them in uncertainty.

P V Muraleedharan P V, from Cheemeni in Kerala's Kasaragod district, was sentenced to death in the UAE in 2009 for the murder of a fellow Malayali from Kerala's Malappuram district. Muraleedharan had been lodged in the Al-Ain jail since then.

Muraleedharan, a football player, went to the UAE in 2006. His father Keshavan was already working in Al-Ain as a driver. The case against Muraleedharan was that he murdered a fellow expatriate from Tirur in Malappuram district and buried him in the desert in 2009. His family said he later confessed to the crime before the authorities. He has been lodged in jail ever since.

Though his father Kesavan tried to meet the victim's family in Tirur to plead for mercy, it didn't work out. Kesavan also met his son in jail many times before he had to return home.

His mother Janaki V V told reporters that he used to call home twice a week before ending up in jail. She has not met him since.
