A police constable was shot dead by militants at Tangmarg in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday evening.
Ghulam Muhammad Dar was shot near his residence in the village of Walio. He was rushed to a nearby health facility where he was declared dead.
Security forces have launched a search operation for the attackers.
The incident marks the third targeted attack by militants in the last two days.
On Monday, a migrant labourer named Mukesh Kumar from Uttar Pradesh was shot by militants in Tumchi Nowpora, Pulwama. Mukesh was critically wounded and died shortly after the attack.
A day before, a police officer, Masroor Ali Wani, was critically injured after being shot by militants while playing cricket at Eidgah in Srinagar.
Wani sustained multiple injuries in the attack and was shifted to a hospital for treatment. Police said preliminary investigation revealed that a pistol was used in the attack.
Dilbagh Singh, the outgoing DGP, said on Monday that Wani was playing cricket with colleagues when he was attacked.
"He is being treated and is recovering," Singh told reporters at Zewan after launching 160 state-of-the-art vehicles for the 43 police stations under Operation Capacity Building (Op CAP).
Singh added that police can't take anything lightly and must remain cautious as the threats persist.
When asked about his message for the police force as he was retiring on October 31, Singh stated that he was not leaving the force as “a policeman always remains a policeman”.
Singh will be replaced by DG CID R.R. Swain.
Targeted attacks on police and migrant workers began in the wake of the abrogation of Article 370 by the BJP in August 2019.
