An All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader has approached a local court in Prayagraj against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who had recently gifted a pet dog named ‘Noorie’ to his mother Sonia Gandhi.
Mohammad Farhan approached the court of Judical Magisrate Aviral Singh on Monday alleging that the pet dog’s name had hurt his religious sentiments.
The word 'Noorie' is specifically related to Islam and also finds a mention in Quran, the AIMIM leader said in his complaint.
Farhan has sought an FIR against Rahul under Section 295 A (hurting religious sentiments) of the Indian Penel Code.
Farhan's lawyer Mohammad Ali told news agency PTI that his client had advised Rahul to change the dog's name and apologise publicly, but it had no effect on him.
The court has asked Farhan to appear before it on November 8 to record his statement, his lawyer said.
Rahul had gifted the lively Jack Russel Terrier puppy to his mother on World Animal Day on October 4.
The Congress leader said he had met Noorie with a locally residing family during his visit to Goa.
"I'd like you all to meet the newest and the cutest member of our family – our li'l pup, Noorie. She flew in from Goa straight into our arms and has become the light of our lives,” Rahul said while sharing a video on his YouTube channel.
