Earthquake strikes Faridabad; tremors felt across Delhi-NCR

This is the second time in a fortnight tremors shook the national capital

An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 on the Richter scale struck Delhi-NCR on Sunday afternoon, the National Centre for Seismology has said.

The epicentre for the quake was nine kilometres east of Faridabad in Haryana and 30 kilometres southeast of Delhi.

"Earthquake of Magnitude:3.1, Occurred on 15-10-2023, 16:08:16 IST, Lat: 28.41 & Long: 77.41, Depth: 10 Km, Location: 9km E of Faridabad, Haryana," the NCS said in a post on X.

Visuals shared on social media by several users are showing people rushing out of residential buildings in panic in Delhi.

This was the second time in a fortnight that tremors shook the national capital region.

On October 3, strong tremors reverberated through parts of north India, including the Delhi-NCR, after a series of earthquakes, the strongest being of magnitude 6.2, jolted Nepal in quick succession.

India is located in a seismically active region. A PTI report quotes experts as saying that the impact of a large-scale earthquake can be reduced if people and institutions strictly comply with the bylaws and codes to build resilient structures.

They say the resonant frequency of a building can play a critical role in determining the level of damage that it experiences during an earthquake, the report said.
