Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee claimed that he has been summoned by the CBI for questioning on Tuesday despite the Supreme Court staying an order by the Calcutta High Court that allowed them to interrogate him. Tweeting the images of the CBI letter dated April 16, Abhishek accused the central agencies of trying to “harass” him.
"In its desperation to 'harass' and 'target' me, BJP exposes CBI & ED to contempt of court! SC stayed the Calcutta HC's order in the morning that granted permission to the Central Agencies to summon me. Yet, the summons was hand-delivered today at 1:45 pm. Grave state of affairs!" Abhishek, nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, said on Twitter.
The Calcutta High Court's single-judge bench had on April 13 permitted both the CBI and the ED to question Abhishek over the allegations levelled by expelled youth Trinamool leader Kuntal Ghosh that the agencies are putting pressure on him to name Abhishek in the multi-crore teachers’ recruitment scam in West Bengal. Ghosh is an accused in the case.
Abhishek challenged the verdict in the Supreme Court. On Monday morning, a bench comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices P.S. Narasimha and J.B. Pardiwala stayed the high court order that Abhishek and Ghosh can be questioned by investigating agencies.
