2 days after his son's death in encounter, gangster Atiq Ahmad, brother shot dead in Prayagraj

They were killed when they were being taken for a medical check-up

Two days after his son was killed in an encounter in Jhansi of Uttar Pradesh, gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad was shot dead in Prayagraj.

According to media reports, two or three people opened fire at Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed while they were taken for a medical check-up.

Atiq Ahmed and his brother were fired at from a close range. Visuals showed Ahmed and his brother talking to reporters while someone shoots the former on his head.

Two people have been held in connection with the killings. The police, however, is yet to issue a statement on the deaths.

The incident comes merely hours after the last rites of Atiq Ahmed's son Asad Ahmed were performed. Atiq Ahmad had sought permission from a magistrate to attend the funeral of his son. However, he could not attend it as the burial took place before the application could be presented before the court.

Atiq Ahmad had been named in more than 100 criminal cases. Among the most sensational cases Ahmad is allegedly involved is that of Raju Pal, the Bahujan Samaj Party MLA who was shot dead in 2005. Umesh Pal, a key witness in this murder case, was gunned down outside his residence in Prayagraj on February 24 this year.

Last month, Ahmad moved the Supreme Court for protection, claiming he and his family have been falsely implicated as accused in the Umesh Pal murder case and he could be killed in a fake encounter by the UP Police.
