West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered a major crackdown against the BJP workers who allegedly attacked six policemen at Tuesday's Nabanna rally.
Administration sources said that the injured policemen included those in the ranks of assistant commissioner and constable, and have been admitted into the state-run SSKM Hospital in Kolkata.
Abhishek Banerjee, MP Diamond Harbour, will visit the injured policemen Wednesday.
The Chief Minister, who attended an administrative meeting in East Midnapore and Midnapore, ordered Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goel to arrest the accused as quickly as possible. "We are ascertaining the identity of the workers through video footage," said a senior officer of Kolkata police.
Meanwhile, cases have been registered against Suvendu Adhikari, Locket Chatterjee and other BJP leaders who were detained on Tuesday. Adhikari said he would approach the Calcutta High Court over his arrest as the "High Court recently gave him immunity from arrest till he commits any cognisable offence."
“And I was picked up before participating in the rally,” said Adhikari, leader of the opposition.
The police have also launched a probe into the incidents of burning police vehicles near Dalhousie square Tuesday.
However, the police are silent on whether or not action would be taken against the policemen who injured many BJP workers, including some leaders.
"A bunch of rioters and hooligans who neither understand peaceful protest nor allow peaceful coexistence carried out the riots yesterday. We condemn this brazen attempt to destroy public peace and damage done to government property. Action must be taken," a TMC spokesperson said.
